And the only thing I can think to update about right now is that I am going for my Level 2 certification for rocket launching this Saturday. It involves a written test on technical knowledge and safety which I have been studying for, and a flight test. I have a J270 motor that I am flying my rocket on for the certification, and the rocket should reach an altitude of around 4400 ft. The cool part is that I have made my first rocket a little longer by adding in a payload bay. I have collaborated with a guy doing a class project on rocket instruments and he has agreed to use my rocket to test his altimeter, so I should get some real altitude and velocity data for my launch on Saturday! I included a picture, so you can see the new addition to the rocket. The payload is the red section. On careful inspection, you can see some of the pressure relief holes drilled into the payload section to keep the payload bay at atmospheric pressure for accurate altitude measurements.

Also, with the experimenting that I am starting to do with this rocket and its design, I am thinking a starting a new blog. Since I struggle with the broad topic I initially gave myself for a blog, and the desire to brag less and simply disseminate gained knowledge, I am entertaining the idea of beginning a rocketry specific blog. It will give me an excuse to explore my eccentric ideas and I think it will be fun to share the successes (and definitely the failures) of my rocket endeavors. Not sure if this is turning into a last post... maybe it is... maybe not... We'll see!
And since I got it, I have taken it on every adventure I go on, and have even made little side-adventures, just because I have the camera. I've made a list of all the things I want to do this coming year with the GoPro and plan to make a movie montage of all my adventures. Here are a few videos of some of the things I have done with the camera so far.
First off, I graduated!! I am now working on my Mechanical Engineering Master's Degree and, starting in Fall 2013, will be earning an MBA at the same time. The program will take a total of 3 years, so I will be finished with school April 2015. My research is in Flow Analysis. I will be using a technique called "Synthetic Aperture Particle Image Velocimetry", SAPIV for short, to capture data about the flow of water around a model of a ladybug wing in a water tunnel. SAPIV uses multiple high speed cameras to capture images of particles seeded in the flow and meshes the images into a series of images at various focal lengths, giving a time-resolved, 3 dimensional velocity field of the flow; not something easily achieved. This will allow us to see the various swirls and twirls in the water around the wings so we can better understand how to better mimic insect flight. The research is fully funded through a grant from the Air Force, so I will not have to work as a TA at all- just focus on the research! Here is a picture of what the setup may look like. A laser is used to illuminate the particles in the flow.
The Supermileage Vehicle turned out great! Our team placed 2nd at the competition in Michigan and had a top MPG of 1,135! Mind you, I won't be buying one of these cars to drive around town with. The cramped space and slow speed would drive anyone crazy. Here is an article on BYU's mechanical engineering website about it-Supermileage Vehicle Standout

The rocket team I participated on went to the competition in Green River, UT with hopes of simply being allowed to launch the rocket. We were allowed, and, to our surprise, the rocket blew up. It wasn't the rocket failing that surprised us, but how it failed. The rocket took off strong, was set on a great trajectory with no wobblies, when all of a sudden, there was a pop and fire started shooting out of the middle of the rocket. The rocket separated, burned the parachute cord, and tumbled back to the earth, still on fire (don't worry, we had a fire permit, special permission from the state, and there was nothing to burn on the ground). Turns out, the rocket motor burned through the aluminum casing. We aren't sure why yet, but it was good to know that it wasn't anything we designed on the rocket that had failed :). The reading we got back from the altimeter was 742 ft when the rocket failed. Pretty good, I'd say, for a bunch of non-rocketeers.
Speaking of non-rocketeers, I'm not sure I want to be one of those anymore. This past week, I ordered myself a high-powered rocket kit and a motor to go to the Salt Flats in August for a rocket launch event. I am going for my Level 1 certification, which, I think, will make me a rocketeer.

I'd like to finish with my other new hobby: fishing. Fishing is great. I thought I was good at it. The first two times I went this year, I caught a total of 9 fish, and cooked a couple of them too. The last 3 times I have gone out with my pole, I've caught nothing. Hopefully I will have better luck tomorrow; I want to have a fish bbq for lunch!themantishttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03337723782439520881noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1065818517116527067.post-26819140876870070952012-01-26T14:35:00.000-08:002012-01-26T14:45:01.028-08:00XXX mpg = Way more mpg than the average carI'm posting a link to the most recent trial run of our Super Mileage Vehicle. This actually took place this morning in the West Stadium Parking Lot. It gives us the most room to practice. I'm not reporting the mpg we got because of a bet that has been placed. Earlier this week, we had a design review where our review claimed that he did not think we could reach 350 mpg by March 22, 2012, let alone 1800mpg, which is the day our final car should be fully assembled with the monocoque fuselage and tuned engine. He said if we could do it, he'd buy all of us ice cream. So, in the spirit of that challenge, we are not publicly reporting any mpg numbers for our car until March 22, 2012. But I will have you all know, that I feel insulted and belittled by this challenge and am prepared to knock it out of the park. AND WE WILL KNOCK IT OUT OF THE PARK.

Anyway, enjoy the video!
-For help understanding the video, just before it started recording, I had just turned off the engine to coast, and I restart the engine as I drive past Kevin (you can hear it as I drive by).
-We didn't actually drive the full 9 miles. We drove 1.912, which is when we ran out of gas (its in a little buret so that we can take readings in mL of how much fuel we have used, so it holds hardly any). We are working on a new way of holding the fuel and measuring it so that we can drive the full 9 mile distance of the race.
-This was our only good test for the day because on the next two tests, the engine struggled to start every time. Come to find out, the wheels kick up a lot of gravel from the parking lot and a grain-of-sand sized piece of asphalt clogged the buret tip and kept the engine from being supplied with fuel. Again, something that we will fix and move forward with.
That's right. 110 mpg, and that was on our first try. A really poor try at that. This morning, our Capstone Team was able to collect data from a coast around a course set-up in the west stadium parking lot. Despite many setbacks including a flat tire, dead battery, and an unforeseen pothole, one good run was recorded, calculated, and put us on the chart. Literally.
Our coach, Dr. Bowman, has a chart in his office with a list of all of the schools that competed in last year's competition with their best mpg for the competition day. All last semester, we were constantly reminded that "you have not posted an mpg; therefore, you have an mpg of 0 and are in last place at the bottom of my chart". Today we received the following email,

"110 mpg sounds great to me. This is better than Hawaii and UCLA. The
next school to beat is University of Houston. They achieved 125 mpg. I
know you can do it. I’ve moved your marker off the bottom of the
list. I am ready to move it higher."

If you have taken a look at the chart on the left, you will notice that while we did beat the mpg of two schools with our first run, both of them did not actually get a chance to race since their cars never got assembled at the competition. BUT, we have a working car!

The next step is to recharge the battery, remember to check the tire pressure before leaving the workshop, and develop our start-stop method of drive-coasting. 1800mpg, you don't stand a chance.themantishttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03337723782439520881noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1065818517116527067.post-22215071481202662712012-01-02T23:14:00.000-08:002012-01-02T23:14:28.718-08:00New Year, New Sports, and Old Books

Happy New Year! And what a great year it will be! For starters, I will be a part-time student; took too many classes this last semester, so I don't have enough left to be full-time, :). One of these few classes will provide a big step forward in progressing towards my life as a wealthy gentleman- skiing. No, skiing will not provide me with wealth, or make me a gentleman. It will, however, give me one of the skills that wealthy gentlemen have. I believe that there are three sports that a wealthy gentleman must be proficient at; namely, Golf, Tennis, and Skiing. These are the three sports that I associate with extravagant vacations and luxurious living, so they are the sports I will learn. And I'm doing alright at learning them, too! I have golf clubs... not very good with them, but I have them; I have a tennis racquet and tennis balls, but as for winning matches... well, just don't ask Blair about it.

As for skiing, last season was the first winter that I went skiing more than once. I could keep up with my friends, but only because they would stop and wait while I clipped back into my skis, so, actually, no. I did not keep up with my friends. That picture above IS of me, but it was also taken just before I became, in the words of my cousin, "A Snow Cone". My goal is to make it down the mountain without falling, and when I can do that, I will get my own pair of skis.

This year will also be great because of the awesome resolutions I have made. Unfortunately, I will not be sharing those on this blog as I saw a video recently from TED that discouraged me from doing so. Apparently, as you can see from the video, sharing my resolutions will lower my chances of actually achieving them. I will let everyone know that I will continue reading many books to enrich my life and broaden my perspectives. And along with that, I would like to give a list of the books I read and am still currently reading from this past year, and a short critique of each.
3. Shakespeare's Sonnets - Boring. Found a few sonnets I liked, though. Numbers 17, 18, and 47.

4. Common Sense - A must read for anyone who considers themselves an American. I would have fought for a revolution after reading it, too.

5. The Hunger Games - A thrilling tale that immediately had my full attention. A fast read. It does have an addicting affect though, and you WILL have to read the other two.

6. A Christmas Carol - Read it at President Monson's recommendation. Great read for the holidays.

7. The Mansion - Another of President Monson's holiday recommendations. Definitely gave me a more charitable spirit during Christmas and made me rethink why I do the things I do.

8. Catching Fire (Hunger Games II) - Same as the first, thrilling and addicting. Also a fast read.

9. Mocking Jay (Hunger Games II) - I told you, "You WILL have to read the other two".

Unfinished:

10. Les Miserables - Wow. It is a long book. I am reading the unabridged version, but perhaps should have picked a condensed one. Compelling story, but lots of side stories for unneeded background.

11. The Natural Navigator - A very interesting book on the ways of finding your location and bearings from signs and patterns in nature. Good for those who don't like GPS, like me.

Well, that's it for now. Again, Happy New Year everyone!themantishttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03337723782439520881noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1065818517116527067.post-70248190953039527092011-12-15T12:39:00.000-08:002011-12-15T13:15:41.889-08:00"Oh, we're just friends" I am not an expert at love. I do not know how to find love, create love, or grow love. I am, after all, an engineer, so no feelings of sympathy need be directed my way; I choose to indulge in my geeky tendencies and accept the consequences. However, I have gotten lucky a few times. The luck is probably building up right now, growing and maturing, until it reaches that critical mass where sparks will fly. And hopefully, those sparks can ignite a small flame.
Something that I have learned through the spots of luck that I have experienced is that guys and girls can't be "just friends". It does not work that way. We have been programmed to want more than just friendship from each other, and if you think that you and someone of the opposite gender are "just friends", you are living in a state of denial. Somebody's feelings are being suppressed for that friendship to work, trust me. Now, there are probably a lot of girls who will read this and think, "Oh my gosh! Does Eric secretly have a crush on me because I thought we were just friends?" When in reality, you should probably be saying to yourselves, "Oh my gosh! Do I secretly have a crush on Eric??" If the latter is is the case, feel free to stop by and profess your love to me. Truth is, I'm probably secretly crushing on you, too, and we will be able to live happily ever after.
Now, out of the mouth of two or three witnesses is truth declared. I did not come to proclaim my crazy radical ideas all by myself. Oh, no. Check out this video by a Utah State student where he interviews 20+ other students about this exact same topic. And please pay close attention to the differences between the men's and women's responses. Remember my earlier statement about living in denial... Enjoy!
These past few months have not been good to me. Well, actually, they have been great, but as to my ability to relate with others, well, that has gone to pot. I play with computers more often, I leave for class before 7am and sometimes don't get home till after 5pm, and I love it. Each day, I realize more and more that I am, unfortunately, an Engineer. Take this past week as an example:

On Monday, I went to the machining projects lab and used a computer controlled mill to make a part for the supermileage car, and it was awesome. On Tuesday, I made CAD drawings of other parts I still need to machine, and they were awesome. On Wednesday, I planned with other engineers how we are going to build carbon fiber composite rockets and launch them in a few months, and it was awesome. On Thursday, I used a computation fluid dynamics software package to analyze the forces that act on a boat as it encounters head waves, and it was awesome (check out the pic). On Friday, I used Excel to calculate the equivalence ratio of an air to fuel mixture in a diesel engine by calculating the percentages of CO2 and CO in the exhaust with the intake pressure varied between 24psi and 30psi, and it was awesome. Saturday, I installed Linux onto my desktop and worked through the command prompt terminal to install a printer driver since HP doesn't officially make one for Linux systems, and it worked, and it was awesome. And on Sunday, I used Linux to hack into my Ipod and pulled off songs and put new ones on, WITHOUT ITUNES, and it was awesome.

It does not get much nerdier and engineery than that. I think I only have one thing goin' for me that keeps me somewhat balanced- I finished the "Art of War" this week and have begun to read another piece of literature that should broaden my perspectives and vocabulary. It is none other than "Shakespeare's Sonnets", in all their glory and loftiness of prose. Funny enough, this comes- coincidentally- after our stake president told us in conference that we should all be studying and writing poetry. So there you go, I am being obedient, expanding my literary knowledge, and saving myself from utter social ineptitude due to my engineering tendencies. I hope from this post, you can all understand my new found awkwardness and geekiness and accept me for who I am, as I am finally doing.

Oh, and in case you still don't understand what is happening to me, just watch this cartoon. I did my best to keep my "knack" under wraps, but it can no longer be restrained. Look out world! I'm an engineer!

P.S. I have given up Facebook for the next little while, in case some of you are wondering what happened. And if you got here from Facebook, I didn't post it there (my sister did). Peace out my faithful followers!themantishttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03337723782439520881noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1065818517116527067.post-24247070247554145442011-10-24T17:32:00.000-07:002011-10-24T19:18:44.589-07:00Bieber FeverTo start off, I just want to say, I do not have "Bieber Fever". In fact, I think I could almost call myself a "Bieber Hater". This was not always the case. Just one short week ago, I was quite indifferent to the whole matter. But then two girls who I will call Kelli M and Maralee B - no, that's too obvious, let's call them K Masterson and M Brown- forced me to make a stand, for better or for worse. For them, I feel they would say I have chosen the latter.

So there we were, taking a wonderful drive together listening to my beats (one of my favorite things) to an FHE activity, when Kelli and Maralee- OOPS! I mean K and M - pressed us to listen to the new JB Christmas single. I was indifferent and allowed them to play it. No sooner had the song begun, that a spontaneous dance party ensued in the back seat. Now, I thought this was fun enough and had no objections to it. Apparently, K and M did not think that the boys in the car (Blair and myself) had strong enough feelings about The Bieber. So they took it upon themselves to... indoctrinate us.

Thursday afternoon, I come home from school around 5:30 and find that our door has been ambushed. Have a look for yourself-

They think they have converted us, but no, they have thought wrong. Now, I was not totally turned off by this nefarious act of vandalism; in fact, I found it slightly entertaining, even fun. Blair and I thought it would be fun to return K's and M's "gift" in kind. We left some innocent, silly little photos of Justin Bieber on their apartment door as well, only they were slightly altered-

For some reason that I cannot comprehend, K and M were not humored. In fact, they seemed perturbed. And, surprise surprise, they wanted revenge (mind you, they made the first strike). Sunday morning comes along, and plastered on every door, displayed on lamp posts and building entrances, and to top it off, TAPED ALL OVER OUR CARS (remember, my car is one of my favorite things), was a picture of Blair, myself, and JB, only Blair and I had had our faces superimposed onto girls' bodies, with the title "JUSTIN BIEBER'S BIGGEST FANS".

I have news for you, K and M: I am not Justin Bieber's biggest fan. I am not any sort of fan. If this is what Justin Bieber drives you to do to others, to those who could be considered friends, I want no part of this boy. I DO NOT LIKE JUSTIN BIEBER.

Recently, as some may have noticed, I have picked up the hobby of reading. I
feel like it is something that will broaden my perspectives, improve my
vocabulary and social skills, and thus, increase my "social currency"
(ask Dustin). And I have downloaded a Kindle App that lets me get many of the
books I want for free! Anyway, I am on to my third book since beginning my
quest for intellectual enlightenment, The Art of War, by Sun Tzu. Just
to show how awesome this new one is, I will explain one of the opening
passages.

Sun Tzu, also known as Sun Wu, had just finished writing "The 13
Chapters", now called The Art of War, and the Emperor, Ho Lu, had
read it and challenged Tzu on its contents. He asked if Tzu could prove its
validity. Tzu replied in the affirmative. Ho Lo asked if it could be proven
with women. Tzu again confirmed it to be so, and subsequently asked for 180 women
and 2 of the emperor's finest concubines as the leaders. On first attempting to
train them in the the courtyard for the emperor to observe, his first command,
"Turn Right!" was met with laughter, to which he replied, "If
words of command are not clear and distinct, if orders are not thoroughly
understood, then the general is to blame." He drilled them again, and then
this time said, "Left turn!" Still met with giggles. Tzu then said,
"If words of command are not clear and distinct, if orders are not thoroughly
understood, then the general is to blame. But if his orders ARE clear, and the
soldiers nevertheless disobey, then it is the fault of their officers." He
immediately ordered the two concubine leaders beheaded, selected two new
leaders, gave the orders, and was obeyed. He was made general of the army.

I digress. Anyway, to make sure I AM improving my vocabulary skills, I have
been trying out new words that I read in these books. Maybe some of you would
like to try them out as well:

Laconic-using few words; expressing much in few words; concise: (Think Mr.
Darcy)
Terse- neatly or effectively concise; brief and pithy, as language (similar
to laconic)
Prudent- wise or judicious in practical affairs; sagacious; discreet or circumspect;
sober (NOT Mrs. Bennet)
Obsequious-characterized by or showing servile complaisance or deference; fawning:
(Think Mr. Collins)

Have fun with these new words. By the way, I've wanted to use all four of these words, but really have only had he chance to use Laconic and Prudent. That's all or today!
themantishttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03337723782439520881noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1065818517116527067.post-44393516077736138432011-10-12T15:35:00.000-07:002011-10-12T15:35:49.088-07:00What Makes My World Go 'RoundAs I drove home from school today- yes, I drive to school sometimes despite living a mere 10 minute walk from my first class (its very cold some mornings!)- I was in a state of... GOOD. I just felt really good. There is something about driving around on a sunny day, listening to sweet music that just makes me feel great. As I have been pondering upon this experience the last few hours, I have been thinking of other things that put me in a state of good. Here it is:

-Driving on a warm, sunny day with all the windows down and the sunroof open
-Driving on a cold, sunny day with all the windows down and the sunroof open, and the heater on
-Driving with my favorite jams playing and the bass shaking my seat on a sunny day
-Driving with my favorite jams playing and the bass shaking my seat on a cold day
-Driving with my favorite jams playing and the bass shaking my seat on a rainy day
-Driving fast with my favorite jams playing
-Driving slow in traffic with my favorite jams playing
-Driving up Provo Canyon
-Driving down Provo Canyon
-Driving with my family
-Driving to go pick up my family
-Washing my car on a sunny day and drying her for a spotless finish
-Going to the temple
-Cuddling with a girl

Well, I guess this list could have been shortened. There are 4 THINGS in this world that put me in a state of good- DRIVING, FAMILY, GOSPEL, GIRLS.

Want to know what makes my world go 'round? Want to make me a happy boy? Get me to do anything that involves any of those 4 things and you will never see me in a bad mood.
So I won't talk about that. What I WILL talk about is my recent explorations into the female psyche. What is it that women really want? What are they hoping for and dreaming about? I decided to consult the ubiquitous source of women's dreams and hopes- Jane Austen. More specifically, Pride and Prejudice. Actually, that's a lie. Not the Jane Austen part. The part about trying to understand girls. Its not true. I really just wanted to read the book. And as sad as it is to admit this, I love it. I play the scenes out in my mind as I read, trying to imagine the expressions on their faces, their dancing feet, and their rooms of conversation. The worst part is, I am struggling with it right now, not because I tire of its intricate details, but because I can not wait for Mr. Darcy to make is first proposition to Miss Bennett and her subsequent rejection. I am just dying to read it and feel the violent emotions of the moment.
Well, I need to go to bed now. 7am isn't coming any later than it did that fateful first day of school. Quick update on that, we are doing well with the super-mileage car. The final fuselage design has been finished. The foam blocks for the model have been cut, and tomorrow we start carving them to their proper form. After that will be a mold made from fiberglass and then the actual car from carbon fiber. Things are moving! Goodnight faithful followers.themantishttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03337723782439520881noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1065818517116527067.post-89400503883359427722011-09-05T10:15:00.000-07:002011-09-05T10:16:16.542-07:0080 lbs- 3.5 horsespower- 1,000 mpg

Intrigued? This is the pac car II, built by a team in Switzerland. And no, it does not get 1,000mpg. It gets 12,000 MPG!!! It is the most fuel efficient car in the world, and we are going to copy it. Well, not exactly, but the car we will build for the SAE Super Mileage Competition in June will be similar to this car, as will the rest of the competitors' cars. To be in the top teams, we will need to get over 1,000mpg, so that is what WE are expecting. I am so excited to be on this team and be a part of the design and building process, and of course, BEING THE DRIVER!! Being the driver, however, does have its drawbacks, first and foremost is maintaining a low weight. At our first group meeting, our faculty coach brought breakfast cake for everyone. We all introduced ourselves and explained our place on the team. When it came to my turn, I said, "Hi, I'm Eric Hardester, and I am the driver". Dr. Tree, who is helping us with choosing engine modifications, immediately reached over and took my breakfast cake away! Oh well, it takes sacrifice to do cool, meaningful things, right? (He gave the cake back a few seconds later).
The other exciting news of my life, the Return of Ryan. This kid is a beast, and its so awesome having him back. He is living with my cousin and me at our apartment and is constantly writing new beats and jammin' on the piano. Its pretty sweet. Here is one of his latest piano covers. The more you listen to it, the more you'll find that it will never cease to blow your mind with awesomeness.
Click on the link.

Ok. Now you can continue reading. SUMMER ROCKS!!! There is so much fun stuff going on all the time. But before I get into all the fun stuff that happens in the summer, let me give an update on my schooling life. I am an official research assistant for my professor now, which means I have a job! Still studying bubbles, but not having to count them anymore, and I get paid so it doesn't really matter what I'm doing anymore. Also, I got the driving position for the super-mileage car! That means for my senior capstone project I will help to build this car, learn to drive it efficiently, then actually drive it on a track so that we can measure the gas mileage it gets. It should be pretty awesome! (And since you're listening to the song, ISN'T RASCAL FLATTS PRETTY AWESOME TOO??)

Alright, onto summer fun. We've been doing some sweet stuff here in Provo. I got a second longboard so I can take friends/girls down provo canyon on the river trail. Blair, Evan, and I got river tubes to float down provo river, which we have done multiple times in the last few weeks. Also with extra tubes for friends/girls. SO FUN! And ps, we rent life jackets everytime, so don't anyone get all nervous for our lives or anything. We do it the safe way. There have been constant fireworks over the past month. Multiple firework shows, and for those who don't know, Utah legalized aerial fireworks this year, so when I say firework shows, I mean REAL firework shows. And, last but not least, RYAN IS COMING HOME IN 4 DAYS!!! I am super excited, just so everyone knows. He has been serving a mission in Guadalajara Mexico for the past two years, and I have only had about 2 hrs with him in the last 4 years. I got home the same day he left, so we had lunch together and that is all the face-to-face contact we have had since 2007. So yes, I am excited for him to come home and we can chill for reals again.

Anyway, just wanted to post a summer update for everyone. Hope you all are having a good summer. PEACE!themantishttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03337723782439520881noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1065818517116527067.post-75640537265565643462011-06-14T10:08:00.000-07:002011-06-14T10:08:59.232-07:0017 Years and Counting

Happy Birthday, Claire! Its my sister's birthday today, and I am so happy for her. She rocks my socks. She blows my mind with her awesomeness. She... She is always on my side. I tell her I took a girl on a date, and she instantly loves the girl. I tell her the girl said no to a second date, and she instantly hates the girl. I can always call her and know she will side with me. Its good to have such a dependable source of support in your life like that. Seventeen years have gone quick. I still remember the day she was born. I remember the exact moment, actually. Mind you, I was not there in person. I think that sort of experience would have been too much for 5 year old Eric. BUT, I remember where I was when I was told Claire had entered our familyI was outside in our backyard running around doing who knows what kind of mischief, when my Grandma Hardester came outside to tell me that Claire had been born. I was so excited to have a sister that I yelled, "YEESSS!!! YEEAAAHH!!" and did a cart wheel. It was a sweet cartwheel, too. Best I have ever done, probably. And she deserved such an awesome cartwheel, definitely.
I am going to graduate this April! I decided that last week, got permission yesterday, and signed up for the senior classes last night. Now, this is awesome. I will be done with school; free to go off and work on sweet things in sweet places, or go learn more sweet things at sweet schools and get a graduate degree. However, this also means I will not be going to school with Claire when she comes to school here in a year after her NEXT birthday. There's the bitter part. Claire, if only you had been born one year earlier. Actually, that's not your fault- Mom, Dad, you should have had Claire a year earlier. So unless I decide to stay at BYU for my Master's, no school sharing. We'll see what happens. A lot can happen in a year ;) . Anyway, the other cool part of that story is that with this senior class I am signed up for now, I will have a year long project working on a real engineering problem. Got an email this morning about a particular project that will involve designing a super efficient car. They need someone who is short and not too heavy to be the driver for the car, someone between 5' and 5'6" and 130lbs or less. For once, my vertical challenges may actually end up working to my advantage. I sent an email back to let them know that I fit this criteria and would love to be a driver for such a car. We'll see what happens! Life is AWESOME. and again... HAPPY BIRTHDAY CLAIRE!!!
themantishttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03337723782439520881noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1065818517116527067.post-36337661300037521082011-06-04T13:19:00.000-07:002011-06-04T13:23:38.723-07:00Fiery Attraction

I took a chance this week. I went for the gold. Actually, I went for the Smokey Joe- I bought a Weber Grill! Last weekend, many adventurous souls took the opportunity to go camping, and everyone knows, camping is really just an excuse to sit around and play with fire. A few of us not heading out into the woods got to talking and decided that you don't have to go camping to play with fire; in fact, we could play with fire in front of our apartment with a fire pit. So, we searched ksl and craigslist that afternoon to no avail. However, on a warm wednesday afternoon, nestled between two random foreclosure houses for sale, I found what I was looking for: a small portable Weber Grill. I called the current owners and quickly made arrangements to become the new owner. And within a few hours, it was mine.
Now for the gamble. I had a feeling that if I just lit a small fire in that thing in front of my apartment, anyone and everyone within the smell of the smoke would join in staring at the mesmerizing flames with me. And guess what? THEY DID. That night, just like the bugs that hover around our porch light, people began climbing out from behind trees and under rocks to get close to my magical source of light, warmth, and entertainment. Soon, there were 20 people, marshmallows, and a guitar. What did I decide after that moment?

Fire=Instant Party

This has proven true yet again, when my cousins and brother returned from watching "Limitless" (which, by the way, was an awesome movie and made me feel pained for the seconds wasted at the traffic light as we waited for it to turn green) at the dollar theatre to have our own little fire. And Evan, being the survival man he is, wanted to start it with lint from our dryer and his flint and steel kit. It TOTALLY WORKED! I did help it with lighter fluid though, not completely trusting the lint. Sure enough, within 5 minutes of the fire starting, we had 4 more people emerge from the shadows, and at the high point, we had 10 people, marshmallows, and a laptop with a playlist of requested songs. So I state it again- Fire=Instant Party. So, anytime anyone wants to be a part of these magical moments, just let me know and I will be glad to satisfy that fiery attraction of yours.

And here is the trailer for Limitless, and yes, it is as cool as the trailer.

<![endif]-->We did it! We finally got a permanent name for our company! Alcança ( [a']l-kän-s[a'] ). It is Portuguese for "reaching" or "achieving". It came at about 12:30am last Wednesday. We needed to come up with a name we could stick with so that we could design some sort of logo for the upcoming Y2K race on Saturday that we were making shirts for. I tried a thousand different names that never quite felt how we wanted it to feel. And Blair, while I'm drifting into a splendid slumber, sleepily tells me, "Eric, I got a name. 'Alcança'." I told him it sounded awesome, then fell asleep. The next morning, it still felt good, so we kept it! We made waterbottles with the logo on it, we put the logo on the shirt, and all was well with the world.

Now what is the Y2K? Only the greatest race ever conceived and accomplished in 1 month's time. My friend, Hank Taylor, being the entrepreneur he is, realized that there are many races in Provo, but none that tackle the Y trail. So he made one that does, the Y2K. It is a 2k race from the bottom of the trail to the top (yep, comes out to 2k's). It has a 1076ft elevation climb and a recently recorded time of 15:21 to beat. Up for the challenge? Start training because there will probably be another one in August.

Here are pics of the shirt and of the race. All the other sponsors were all of Hank's other business ventures, Red Haiku, Disc Golf Guru, and one which should have also been included, the Provo Monster Mile. Also check out Aerobic Workout Music, which has instrumental hymn arrangements that are perfect for working out to. In fact, the MTC plays it at its gym for missionaries to listen to while they have gym time. And I can't forget the shirt we made for "Clash at Demonhead", an ultimate frisbee team that wanted team jerseys. Check it out!

How often does that bad day start with a terrible morning? I had a terrible morning. Both of the sports teams I am on lost last night, I didn't get to sleep on time because of homework, and woke up with no time for breakfast and ate a tortilla on the way to class. I felt tired, defeated, and hungry. Now, I did not want to have a bad day, so I thought to myself, "Hey, why don't I just start the day over??" So that is what I did! I came home from class, baked some delicious blueberry muffins, and in a few minutes, I will be off to bed to take a nice nap! The day already feels so much better just from the fact that I have eaten 6 scrum-didily-umptious muffins and decided to take a sleep. This is going to be a great day yet!

Also of note, this weekend Dinan Apparel filled an order for an ultimate frisbee intramural team (my team) and they look sick. The color of the shirt is called "safety green" and yes, the shirts are self-luminescent. We were hoping the shirts would add to the all important intimidation factor of frisbee, but alas, we still lost (contributing to my terrible morning). Our team is Team 15, hence the 15 on the shirt. Enjoy! And special thanks to Cameron, Chelsie, and Courtney in helping with the shirts this time.
This one was for Kelly Haight and her friends (check out her blog Whoa, dream big.). These shirts turned out really cool with some fancy font work we did, and as you can see in the pics, we had names put on the back of the shirts as well. We got a new emulsion kit that saved us time and money and allowed us to screen print the names on instead of doing iron-on's like we had planned. It gave us a much sturdier and precise screen as well. Check them out!
So, I am also sitting next to my brother Evan right now, who commented on our toaster. He says, "It looks like its upside down, but its not..." Its true. This toaster is wider at the top than at the bottom, kind of the opposite of any other toaster we have ever had. We've moved into a new apartment and the toaster belongs to our roommate. I wonder if he knows that his toaster looks like it is upside down. Maybe he bought it that way on purpose. I don't know, but at least the rest of our apartment is right side up. I love our new apartment, or town house as I like to refer to it. Its in a small complex, and each unit has a basement, main floor, and upstairs bedrooms. It is SO COOL! It feels like an actual house and not some wannabe apartment dorm place (Liberty Square, I'm talking about you). So glad to be out of that place, and I am excited to meet the ward on Sunday. So far, everyone has been pretty nice. But I made the mistake of being too friendly... I was washing the outside of the townhouse and said hello to a guy walking by, introduced myself, to which he replied, "Oh, so you are new in the ward! I am the ward clerk and I would like to get you to fill out a info sheet and take your picture!" So much for laying low the first couple weeks to avoid hard core callings. Dang.
So there I was, checking out my friend Cameron Smithson's blog (My Life as an Anagram, check it out, hilarious), and this song starts playing called "I Wish I Was James Bond" by Scouting for Girls, and I think to myself, "I have ALWAYS wished I was James Bond!" Strangely enough, this fantasy started on my mission. Every few weeks, I would have dreams about being a secret agent with an important mission to fill. Sometimes it involved running through jungles and hiding in bushes, other times it involved the getaway car being a Big Wheels Tricycle. But always exciting, and I was always the good guy. I come home from my mission, and I still have those dreams of being some secret agent on a secret mission, AND I LOVE THEM!! I wake up so pumped and wanting to sneak around and do sneaky things (don't worry, I don't). Then I watch 007 movies, and I see James Bond living my dream, driving fancy cars, sneaking around doing sneaky things, and just being awesome. Not forgetting that he also gets all the ladies.
Anyone ever played the "assassin" game before? You are given a target of someone else playing the game, and you have to "assassinate" them with a squirt gun. This is about the closest I have been able to legally become my dream self. Playing it freshmen year, I would find out my target's name and get a picture of them. I would subsequently find out where they lived, where they work, and set up a stake-out in front of their apartment (isn't it creepy what you can find on the internet about people?). One of the funnest games I have ever played. So our ward started this game about a month ago, and I was pumped! Alas, I was betrayed the first day. While I was being a serviceable person and donating blood, a "friend" saw me and texted his roommate who subsequently came and assassinated me in the act of saving 3 lives. How rude. Atleast I was still able to get my fix of secret agentness from assisting in the assassination of others. So there you have it. My big secret is out. I wish I was James Bond.
P.S. We have some sweet shirts we are making this weekend for a friend to wear to tennis matches. I don't want to ruin the surprise of it all, so just check back in a few days and see the awesomeness of these shirts they designed.themantishttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03337723782439520881noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1065818517116527067.post-74796974050015103072011-04-15T09:34:00.000-07:002011-04-15T09:36:20.079-07:00Brocks, Paper, ScissorsI love being a business partner. You get to do such cool things. Like yesterday, Blair and I got started on an order someone placed the night before for t-shirts for "The Brocks", a local band who just happens to live next door to us. They wanted twenty shirts, and said they would send us the graphic for it. When we woke up yesterday morning, we saw this-

Yeah, it looks SWEET! But we had no idea how we were going to make it. Instead of calling them up and saying, "Sorry Brocks, this is too hard, find someone else", we started researching how to do it. After watching a couple youtube videos, reading a few blogs, and getting some major help from Andrea Busath with adobe photoshop (THANKS ANDREA! check out her awesome photography business - Capturing Joy Photos),
at 11:45 pm we were able to deliverer a box to The Brocks next door with 30 of these-

So Business continues to grow! And don't worry everyone; yes, I am giving myself plenty of time to study for my finals next week. I spent a good 6 hours studying yesterday, about all that I can handle in one day, so it was a very productive day yesterday. Anyway, all of you should go to The Brocks concert tonight at Sammy's in downtown Provo. Starts at 8, its free, and you can buy one of these sweet t-shirts to support The Brocks and support future t-shirt orders from us! Here is a video of their music, then you can decide if you want to come. GO BROCKS!!! Oh, don't stop being a huge fan of The Brocks, but last month Yellowcard came out with a new cd, and it is awesome. Just sayin'.
Dinan Apparel is now in business. This weekend, Blair and I successful printed 56 custom t-shirts for our first two customers. The first order was 12 shirts for my sister Claire and her cupcake business, "Cupcakes by Claire" (check out www.cupcakesbyclaireonline.webs.com, its sweet!!). Here are the pictures from that job-

The other order was for 44 shirts for students to wear the last day of class of a professor who is retiring this year. Dr. Christiansen, or "Dr. C.", has taught engineering at BYU for several decades. In fact, some of the current BYU professors had Dr. C as a teacher when they were students. Most of the students bought shirts and there is one for Dr. C as a gift as well.
And "BRAVE LIKE BIRDIE" refers to a story that Dr. C has told the last few years about a sparrow he saw down in Newport Beach that had a crippled leg, but was fatter than all the other sparrows because he was brave and would get closer to the children feeding the birds than another of the other sparrows. He would then tell us stories of students who had overcome great obstacles because they were brave, and we will overcome great obstacles and succeed if we are brave like Birdie. I'm excited to see 44 students wearing our shirts on Wednesday! So, its official. WE ARE IN BUSINESS! Feel free to place orders for custom t-shirts. We currently offer monochrome graphics (any color, but only one color), any color shirt we can get. Just shoot us an email at dinanapparel@yahoo.com and we will give you a quote ($10 on average). Let the fun begin!themantishttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03337723782439520881noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1065818517116527067.post-6484729381254457232011-04-07T08:44:00.000-07:002011-04-07T08:44:15.963-07:00GenesisThis morning has been great. Yesterday I had a 12-page research paper and a working engine that I build due, making my mornings early and hectic the last few days. But not today. I slept in till 8, took a long shower, and had some delicious Cinnamon Life cereal, and have now decided- it is time to start THE BLOG. I figure in this first post, I should lay out what I will write about in the future and set the tone and build the suspense. This blog will cover many topics ranging from business to engineering projects, from thoughts on life to the actual happenings of life. So, here we go.

This 12-page paper is a semester long research project I have been working on. I wanted to do something with my car, so I measured the sound levels and frequency spectrum from my car exhaust. The paper was not very spectacular, but I am happy with it.

Now, the engine. The engine is a "pip-squeak" engine, designed to run on compressed air. A group of four of us designed the engine, created the drawings and manufacturing process sheets (step by step of how to make the parts), and then built it. It runs beautifully, and it sounds like an ATV. Here is a slow motion video I took of it-

Now, to get everyone fully up to date with my life, I need to talk about a recent business venture of mine. My roommate, Blair Harris, and started a screen printing business last week- Dinan Apparel (pronounced 'deenin'). Since starting, we have received two orders of t-shirts, one for 12 shirts, and another for 40 shirts. We have bought a printer that will burn the stencils into our emulsion screens, and we have bought the ink and today we will finish ordering the t shirts for these orders. Friday all of our supplies should be in and we will be able to start production. Updates of these shirts will follow.
Well, that is all I have time for today. My wonderful morning of relaxation is now over and it is time to head to class.themantishttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03337723782439520881noreply@blogger.com0
